What are the origins of the modern, liberal welfare state?

Join us Tuesday afternoon, October 11th, for a lecture by Dr. Klaus Vieweg entitled, “Beyond Wall Street and People’s Republic – Hegel as the Founder of the Concept of a Welfare State”.

This talk explores the ideas of G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831), arguably the most influential philosopher of the last two hundred years. A key feature of Hegel’s political philosophy is his theory of civil society, and the idea of the rational regulation of the market. Understanding Hegel’s theories gives us priceless insights into the controversies that dominate modern social and political debate, right down to the present election year.

You can read Klaus’ paper that the lecture is based upon here [pdf].

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the Institute for the Study of Democracy and Liberalism.
