Since 2008 Americans have had to deal with high unemployment, lackluster economic performance, and an ever-growing government debt. What has been causing these problems and why haven’t matters improved?

Ask different economists and you will get wildly different answers. Economists influenced by John Maynard Keynes argue that markets are inherently unstable and that the recession was caused by a hands-off government. In contrast to that theory, those influenced by Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek argue the opposite and point to various government interventions including loose monetary policy and lending mandates as causes of the housing bubble. While the Keynesian solution is that government needs to do more, the Hayekian solution is that government needs to do less. Who is right and what should we do to get out of this mess?

On Monday, March 4th from 12:30—1:50pm, come hear Fayetteville State University economist Edward P. Stringham present these competing views, and provide us with his analysis of where we’re going and what’s likely to come of our continually pushing back from the “fiscal cliff.”

The lecture is at LIU Post, Humanities Hall, Room 119. Address: 720 Northern Blvd., Brookville, NY, 11548

OUR LECTURER, Edward Peter Stringham, Ph.D., is the L.V. Hackley Distinguished Professor for the Study of Capitalism and Free Enterprise in the School of Business and Economics at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He comes to us as part of a lectures/discussion series provided through a grant secured by Dr. Shawn Welnak, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, LIU Post. Dr. Welnak is also a favorite lecturer at Hutton House and will be providing two series here later this spring.
